The old refrigerant question
A system low on refrigerant has a leak — refrigerant circulates in a sealed loop and is not consumed. On a young system that is a repair: find the leak, fix it, recharge, move on. On an older one, the conversation changes for a reason that has nothing to do with the machine and everything to do with what is inside it.

- 3 Air handler and furnace — Up in the attic, asleep nine months, asked for everything in December.
- 4 Coil and condensate drain — Litres of river-valley moisture a day, leaving through one narrow line above your ceiling.
- 5 Attic ducts — The coldest air in the house, commuting through the hottest room on the property.
- 6 Outdoor unit — Full sun, full load — where August culls capacitors by the thousand.
Why the age of the refrigerant matters
Refrigerants have been phased out in stages over the past two decades, and when production of a type ends, the remaining supply is reclaimed and resold. Scarcity does what scarcity does: the price per pound climbs, sometimes dramatically. A system old enough to run a phased-out refrigerant can therefore face a situation where simply refilling it approaches a meaningful fraction of what a new system costs — before anyone has fixed the leak that emptied it.
That is why an honest technician on an older unit will name the refrigerant type before quoting, and why « we will just top it off » deserves a follow up question. Topping off without a leak search sells the same visit again next summer, and on expensive refrigerant it does so at a price that should have bought a decision instead.
How to think about it without being sold
Three questions settle most cases. What refrigerant does this system use, and what does it cost per pound today? Where is the leak, and was it actually located — with dye, an electronic detector or a pressure test — rather than assumed? And what does the repair cost against the age of the equipment, in a climate where a Memphis cooling season spends running hours quickly?
A young system with a findable leak is a repair, full stop. An old system losing expensive refrigerant through a coil is usually a replacement conversation, and the honest version of that conversation comes with the numbers written down rather than delivered on a hot afternoon with the house at eighty-five. If the pressure to decide today is heavier than the evidence offered, a second opinion costs one more warm evening.
